Welcome to Biomedica

The history

Already in 2006, BioLiège, Life Sciences Limburg (today: LifetecZONe) and LifeTec Aachen-Jülich joined forces and announced the convergence of their conference activities. Biomedica 2007, as a result, was a huge success with over 650 participants. Biomedica 2008, in Maastricht, The Netherlands, even succeeded in attracting over 800 participants.

Formerly these three life sciences organizations in the regions of Liège, Aachen and Limburg organized their local conferences individually (Bioforum, Cells at Work, LifeTecXchange and Colloquium on Biomaterials). The three organisations have decided to jointly host one annual conference (Biomedica), thereby focusing on the core competences of their regional research institutes and the research activities of companies active in the life sciences cluster. This is quite unique in the world of Biomedical Technology.

The Meuse-Rhine-Triangle

Within the Meuse-Rhine triangle, covering the neighbouring regions around Aachen in Germany, Maastricht and Eindhoven in the Netherlands and Liège and Hasselt in Belgium, there are strong competences in life sciences. These competences are well embedded within the 5 universities in the region, but also within many key research institutes and more than 300 larger and smaller companies, all active in this area.

The regions have organized their life science activities through foundations such as: LifeTec Aachen-Jülich, LifetecZONe (Dutch province of Brabant and Limburg) and BioLiège. More recently LifeTechLimburg.be, the life sciences organization of Belgium Limburg, has joined forces with these partners.

They are all part of what is called the “Heartbeat” of Life Sciences in Europe. These foundations have created strong networks between their members and organize events on new developments. Here, science and industry can meet to initiate or develop partnerships in NRW, The Netherlands and Belgium.

Biomedica

These focus areas are also the main topics of the Biomedica conferences:

  1. Biomaterials and Biopolymers
  2. Molecular medicine and imaging
  3. Medical devices
  4. Pharmaceuticals and Nutraceuticals

In these areas, existing strong competences will be further enhanced through new contacts and co-operations.. This is why we are organizing Biomedica 2009 and invite the world of life science to participate.
